Ancient Muharram Ritual Draws Crowds in Ardabil

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Grand Mosque of Ardabil in Northwestern Iran to take part in the traditional Tasht-Gozari ceremony, one of the oldest Muharram rituals observed in Iran's Azari-speaking regions. [PHOTOS]
The ceremony, held during the final days of Dhu al-Hijjah ahead of Muharram, features the symbolic placement of water-filled basins (tashts) in mosques and religious centers.Tasht-Gozari is deeply rooted in the religious traditions of Azari-speaking communities and symbolizes preparation for the mourning ceremonies of Imam Hossein (AS), the grandson of the Last Prophet of God Mohammad (PBUH), who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
