Among the key innovations presented were the therapeutic radiopharmaceutical 177Lu-Alpha-MSH, developed for laboratory and clinical treatment of melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, and the diagnostic agent 68Ga-Alpha-MSH, designed for PET imaging of metastatic melanoma. Preclinical studies of 68Ga-Alpha-MSH indicate strong potential for clinical PET imaging, with early results in cancer patients described as highly promising.
Iran also introduced an automated system for producing radiopharmaceuticals used in the treatment of metastatic bone pain. The system, developed within the field of nuclear medicine, is capable of producing compounds such as Samarium-153 (Sm-153-EDTMP) and Lutetium-177 (Lu-177-EDTMP), which play a significant role in alleviating severe bone pain in patients with advanced cancers. In addition, a National Nuclear Education Network was presented as part of efforts to strengthen training and knowledge infrastructure in the nuclear sciences.
