Iran to Launch Several Satellites into Space Soon, Indigenous Launcher Awaits Deployment
The Islamic Republic of Iran plans to carry out four significant space missions in the coming months, involving the launch of remote-sensing and telecommunications satellites using domestically developed launchers.
Hassan Salariyeh, head of the Iranian Space Agency, announced that in the first half of the Iranian year 1404 (March 21 to September 22, 2025), three satellites—Zafar, Paya, and Nahid 2—will be launched, along with the deployment of the Iranian national launcher Simorgh. The Zafar satellite, designed and built by Tehran's University of Science and Technology, is a remote-sensing satellite intended for Earth imaging with a resolution of 16 to 26 meters. It can be used for resource management, environmental monitoring, and land use planning. Its first version was launched in February 2020 using the Simorgh launcher but failed to reach orbit due to a malfunction in the second stage of the launcher. The Iranian Paya satellite, also a remote-sensing type, aims to assist in monitoring the environment, natural resources, and collecting data for land management. According to the Iranian Space Agency, Paya is part of this year’s missions to advance indigenous technology and develop the space economy.Nahid 2, an Iranian research telecommunications satellite, was designed and built by the Iranian Space Research Institute. It is Iran’s first satellite with a three-axis stabilization system and is equipped with deployable solar panels. Nahid 2 is designed for S-band communication experiments and testing technologies needed for data transmission in low Earth orbit (LEO).
The Iranian Simorgh launcher, powered by liquid fuel and featuring a multi-stage design, was developed by the Iranian Ministry of Defense’s Aerospace Industries Organization. It can carry satellites weighing up to 250 kilograms into a circular orbit at an altitude of approximately 500 kilometers.Liquid-fueled launchers offer higher efficiency compared to solid-fueled ones, with better control, precision guidance, and suitability for multi-stage launchers.Iran’s space achievements have been realized despite severe international sanctions led by the United States.
