Iranian FM: Trump’s ‘Economic D-Day’ to Bring ‘Further Defeat’ to US
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi dismissed US President Donald Trump’s newly announced sanctions campaign, calling the “so-called ‘Economic D-Day'” a diversion from domestic American issues.
Writing on X on Thursday, Araqchi warned that continuing failed US policies would deepen Washington’s economic difficulties and fuel further hostility toward Iran.“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America's own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” he said, attaching photos of reports highlighting the unprecedented growth of US national debt, including headlines noting that the debt had reached $40 trillion after decades of borrowing.
After a 60-day window to negotiate a peace accord with Tehran expired on Monday without breakthroughs, Trump has vowed to target any country helping Iran’s economy, shifting from his previous focus on military threats. The US suspended its most recent wave of attacks late last month, with Trump claiming he wanted to provide space for talks. He has since stated, however, that all negotiations have been halted. The pause in hostilities occurred amid widespread reports that the US military had largely depleted its stockpile of high-precision munitions and interceptor missiles.
“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat—and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” the Iranian foreign minister added.
