Iran FM: US Excessive Demands Hamper Agreement in Islamabad Negotiations

Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi stated that Washington’s “excessive demands” hindered a deal during the talks in Pakistan aimed at a conclusive end to the US-Israeli war waged against Iran in late February.
During a telephone conversation with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, on Monday, Araqchi said despite progress on many issues discussed, "the US prevented the achievement of an agreement due to its approach of excessive demands and the continuous change of its demands."
The talks, held Monday in Pakistan’s capital, were the first high-level negotiations between Tehran and Washington since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran. The discussion focused on resolving tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear program, among other issues.American Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, stated after the talks that it was now up to Iran to accept what he called the “final, best” offer from the United States. But Iranian officials dismissed the framing, accusing Washington of imposing excessive demands during the negotiations and failing to show the necessary flexibility to reach an accord.
The top French diplomat, for his part, affirmed his country’s support for a diplomatic solution to end the war. He also hoped that with the continuation of talks a final deal would be reached within the framework of the Islamabad negotiations.
