Iran Denies Demand for Zero Enrichment
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi declared that Tehran will not abandon its uranium enrichment program, describing it as a source of national honor and pride.
Araqchi unequivocally dismissed the endeavours to push Iran toward ending its enrichment activities, outlining Tehran’s stance on interaction with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). “We will in no way accept zero enrichment, because this matter has become a source of national honor and pride,” he stressed.“We have paid heavy material and moral costs for it (uranium enrichment), and we have sacrificed numerous nuclear martyrs to preserve it. We consider any agreement aimed at reducing the enrichment level to zero a betrayal, and we will not submit to it,” the ranking diplomat stated.
Tehran and Washington had held five rounds of indirect talks on Iran’s nuclear program before Israel unleashed a war on the Islamic Republic, which included strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.Mediated by Oman, the 6th round of talks was planned to be held in Muscat, but was called off due to the Israeli raids.Instead of condemning the terror act, the US attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities—an action which was described by Tehran as betrayal to diplomacy.During the course of indirect negotiations, Senior American officials such as President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff have insisted on “zero-level” enrichment on the part of Tehran. But Iranian officials had stressed that any nuclear accord must include the continuation of Tehran’s uranium enrichment activities and an end to sanctions imposed by Washington. They emphasized that Tehran will neither back down from nor compromise on its nuclear rights.
Addressing the framework of Iran’s collaboration with the United Nations atomic watchdog, Araqchi said that Tehran’s engagement would be strictly limited to facilities that have not been targeted in the attacks launched by the Zionist regime and the US in June.“In our interaction with the nuclear agency, we have nothing to do with the bombed nuclear facilities and will cooperate only regarding those facilities that have not been bombed, and solely within the Agency’s regulations,” the foreign minister added.
