Iran Urges Islamic States to Exert Diplomatic Pressure to Stop Gaza War
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on Muslim countries to increase diplomatic pressure and act unitedly to halt the ongoing Israeli crimes against Palestinians in the besieged and bombarded Gaza Strip.
During a telephone conversation with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday, Pezeshkian said the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza are "unacceptable" to any free-thinking human being. "I hope that Islamic countries will stop these atrocities through active diplomacy and diplomatic pressure, and act with unity and responsibility,” he stressed.Referring to Iran’s stance on the Palestinian issue, the president stated that Tehran has always defended the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people. Other Islamic countries should also adopt a stronger and more proactive stance in supporting the people of Palestine and Gaza, the Iranian president noted, stressing that collective endeavours to confront Israeli atrocities in Gaza will be effective.
Israel’s October 2023-present genocidal war on the Gaza Strip has killed over 61,000 people, mostly children and women, and injured more than 151,400 others. The figures exclude tens of thousands of people who are believed to be dead in the bombed-out ruins of homes, shops, shelters and other buildings. The military campaign has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving almost all civilians homeless. The United Nations has warned that most of Gaza's more than 2 million residents are facing famine.
During the phone call, Pezeshkian also referred to the 12-day war imposed by Israel against Iran in June, and said that the onslaught was launched partly due to Tehran’s support for the Palestinian people. “Our only sin is that we stand up for the oppressed Palestinian people and defend their human rights, and we detest the cruelty inflicted upon them. The arrogant powers see this as a sin, and that is why they put pressure on us,” he added.
