Iran’s FM Reiterates Call for Restraint from India, Pakistan
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi calls for restraint between India and Pakistan to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region, amid the crisis following a deadly attack last month in Kashmir.
Upon his arrival in New Delhi on Thursday, Araqchi reiterated his earlier call for restraint from both sides that he made during his visit to Islamabad this week, as fears of a wider and prolonged war grow.“We hope that India and Pakistan will prevent the escalation of tension in the region,” he said, adding, “We seek a reduction of tension in the region, particularly for the expansion of economic cooperation among regional countries."The top diplomat noted that he would discuss the latest developments in the region in a meeting with his Indian counterpart.
Tensions have been escalating between the two nuclear-armed countries since a deadly attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam in April, which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan has denied any involvement.On Wednesday, Indian Armed Forces announced that they struck nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, prompting swift retaliation from Islamabad in the worst fighting in more than two decades between the nuclear-armed neighbours.Heavy exchanges of artillery fire have been reported along the Line of Control dividing Indian and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.Islamabad has promised to retaliate following the Indian military attacks, fuelling fears of a broader confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.Pakistan’s military confirmed at least 31 civilians were killed and 46 others injured in the Indian attacks and ensuing cross-border shelling. India announced at least 13 people have been killed and more wounded in Indian-administered Kashmir due to Pakistani fire.
Iran's foreign minister stressed that the region needs "peace, especially to expand economic collaboration between regional countries", expressing hope that this will happen.
