Iran Rejects Trump's Remarks on Tehran's Nuclear Program

Iran's Foreign Ministry's Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei refuted US President Donald Trump's controversial comments on "total dismantlement" of Tehran’s nuclear program, reiterating the country’s right to acquire nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in accordance with logic and international law.
Speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday, Baqaei reaffirmed Iran's unwavering right to peaceful nuclear energy and expressed readiness to resume negotiations with the United States, following critical remarks by Trump about the need for the full dismantlement of Tehran's nuclear program. The diplomat emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program is rooted in a long-standing policy dating back to the 1970s.He dismissed claims that Iran’s fossil fuel reserves negate the need for nuclear energy, calling such arguments “scientifically and factually baseless".The spokesman stressed that Iran’s nuclear policy is grounded in logic, international law, and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), under which enrichment is a recognized right.Baqaei emphasized that the framework guiding indirect negotiations with the US remains unchanged and centered solely on nuclear issues and sanctions relief. He criticized endeavours by some Western states to introduce unrelated issues into the talks, calling them "counterproductive".
In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump stated he wants Iran to completely scrap its nuclear program. He made his remarks after Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi announced that the fourth round of indirect, mediated US-Iran talks, planned for Saturday, had been postponed.Iran and the US have already held three rounds of talks in Muscat and Rome on April 12, 19 and 26, mediated by Oman, aimed at sealing an accord over Tehran's nuclear program.Iran has announced it was “extremely cautious” about the potential success of the negotiations. But Washington has seemed confident in reaching a new pact with Tehran over its nuclear program.
Addressing recent delays in negotiations between Tehran and Washington, Baqaei said they were agreed upon with Omani mediation, and Iran awaits further coordination. Responding to Trump’s threat to block Iranian oil exports, Baqaei said contradictory US messaging undermines dialogue and that Iran remains resolute in defending its legitimate rights. He added that if the US genuinely opposes nuclear weapons, many disputes could be resolved. He underscored that such paradoxical US policies could not influence Iran’s resolve to pursue its principles. He also reaffirmed Tehran’s willingness to meet with European officials when mutually agreed, but warned against endeavours to trigger the so-called snapback provisions of the 2015 nuclear accord.“We see no reason to activate it. The fact that certain parties are abusing the situation is rejected,” he underlined. The spokesperson concluded that Iran seeks constructive engagement but will not compromise on its sovereign rights or national interests.
