Envoy Dismisses Claims About Presence of Al-Qaeda Members in Iran
Tehran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani denied claims that Al-Qaeda members were being hosted in Iran.
In a letter to the UN Security Council and the global body’s secretary general, Iravani refuted claims that some Al-Qaeda members are inside Iran.He said the allegations have been made in a report by the team monitoring the UN sanctions. The ambassador described the accusations as baseless, spiteful and unsubstantiated, emphasizing they have been leveled based on claims of a country and without providing any proof.Referring to Iran’s history of fighting terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda and Daesh (also known as ISIL or ISIL) at the battlefield, Iravani added Tehran has not only provided no haven for terrorists, but it has also been a victim of organized terror itself.
The claim comes as Iran, which is one of the biggest victims of terrorism, has been praised as one of the pioneers in the fight against terrorism in the West Asia region.Iran has repeatedly stressed that propagation of such misinformation could potentially hinder endeavours to combat terrorism. Tehran has stressed that the Islamic Republic has always stressed its firm determination to fight terrorist groups and has taken all necessary measures in line with relevant international obligations.Iran has on numerous occasions urged the United States and its European allies to stop its "failed Iranophobia game" and called linking Al-Qaeda to Iran "patently absurd and baseless".Washington, as the main supporter of anti-Iran terrorism, has in numerous reports been proved to have created, trained and supported Daesh and other terror outfits to wreak havoc across the oil-rich region to plunder its resources.
The letter also noted any attempt to tie Iran to Al-Qaeda’s activities in Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Yemen has no logical basis.Iravani stressed the need to revise the UN monitoring team’s unprofessional and politically motivated approaches amid rising terrorist operations in the region and urged the UN Security Council’s sanctions committee to address genuine threats to regional and global security without political bias.He further reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to regional and international cooperation in combating terrorism and called for enhanced intelligence sharing in order to strengthen global counter-terror efforts.
