US Claims Ukraine to Hold Presidential Elections

US President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, told American journalist Tucker Carlson that Ukraine's leadership has agreed to hold a presidential election.
Carlson echoed a Russian narrative saying that Moscow considers President Volodymyr Zelensky "not elected" and, therefore, "can't sign any kind of treaty"."Do you think there will be elections in Ukraine?" Carlson asked. "Yes. There will be. They've agreed to it. There will be elections in Ukraine," Witkoff responded without providing further details. The Kremlin has long tried to portray Zelensky as illegitimate to undermine Kyiv.Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready for talks with Zelensky but insisted that "legal aspects related to his legitimacy" must be considered.
Zelensky’s five-year presidential term expired in May 2024, after which he refused to call new elections, citing martial law. Putin has stressed that he no longer considers Zelensky a legitimate ruler and argued that his current status could be an obstacle to signing a definitive peace.Witkoff argued that Zelensky was “in a very difficult position”, given that Russia has a much larger population and nuclear weapons.“He’s got to know that he’s going to get ground down. Now is the best time for him to get a deal done. President Trump can deliver him the best possible deal,” Witkoff said. He stressed that any aid would become “unsustainable” unless there is a clear plan on how to resolve the conflict. “We just can’t forever give money,” he added. The diplomat also noted that he is completely certain Russia will not attack Europe, dismissing concerns about a potential Russian advance across the continent as unfounded.
