Envoy: West Calling on Iran to Show Restraint, Indication of Double Standard

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani slammed certain Western countries for asking Tehran to restrain itself and ignore its right to self-defense while refusing to urge Israel to refrain from its act of aggression against the Islamic Republic for the sake of regional peace.
Speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council that took place at Tehran’s request to address the issue of the Israeli assault against Iran's military targets, Iravani stressed that Iran reserves its inherent right to respond to the Zionist regime’s recent attacks against the country, and Tehran’s potential retaliation will be perfectly aligned with the international law.“As a sovereign state, the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves its inherent right to respond at a time of its choosing to this act of aggression, a right clearly affirmed under Article 51 of the UN Charter,” he stated, echoing various Iranian authorities’ promise of retaliation against the aggression.“Our response will be lawful, and fully compliant with international law,” Iravani added. The diplomat denounced the Israeli atrocities as “egregious and severe violation of international law and the UN Charter” that led to the martyrdom of four Iranian servicemen and one civilian.
The envoy considered the onslaught to be part of the regime’s broader and sustained pattern of aggression through which it is destabilizing the entire West Asia region with unchecked impunity. He cited the regime’s October 2023-present war on the Gaza Strip and escalated deadly assault against Lebanon as the prime examples of the atrocities. The ambassador regretted that the US, the regime’s biggest ally, had emboldened Israel towards perpetrating the aggression with its “unwavering and unconditional” support and obstruction of the Security Council’s endeavours at holding Tel Aviv accountable. He considered Washington to be “complicit” in the Zionist regime’s assault across the region due to its provision of technical expertise and advanced military systems to Tel Aviv. The support and the resultant Israeli insistence on committing the crimes “gravely undermine regional peace, security and stability”, he asserted. He called on the international community and institutions, including the Security Council, to take decisive measures to respond robustly to such threats and restore peace throughout the region and the world.
“The international community cannot—and must not—remain silent in the face of such violations. The price of this silence is evident in Palestine and Lebanon, where Israel’s impunity perpetuates a vicious cycle of violence and instability across the region,” Iravani stressed. He condemned the Zionist regime’s backers for supporting its atrocities as acts of “self-defense”, while “shamelessly” urging Tehran to exercise self-restraint."Their double standards are clear to the international community. Their supposed concerns for security and stability are empty words when, for over a year, they have given Israel full political, financial, logistical, and weaponry support, enabling its continued atrocities, genocidal acts, and war crimes on Palestinians—and now, on the people of Lebanon," he stated.
Russian Envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia also described Israel's raids on Iran as "predictable", and criticized the US and its allies for not trying to dissuade Tel Aviv from launching airstrikes against the Islamic Republic. He said that Israel "provoked a new spiral of violence in the Middle East", and recalled reports of US sharing of "intelligence" with Israel to carry out the attack and described it as "violation of international law".He urged Israel to "refrain from the practice of provocative military actions in the Middle East".China's UN Envoy Fu Cong also condemned the attack against Iran, and echoed his Russian and Algerian colleagues.Fu expressed "grave concern" over the escalation "caused by Israel's action", and urged "Israel to effectively cease all provocative acts."Calling all sides to exercise restraint, the Chinese envoy stressed the need to follow the UN Charter and the principles of international law.Fu stated that "worsening of tensions" in the Middle East is a result of not reaching a cease-fire in Gaza, adding that "the council should utilize all the means available to it under the charter to ensure the implementation of its relevant resolutions".China also called on US to use its influence on Israel and "curb the expansion and spread of the conflict".
The Israeli Army targeted military centers in the Iranian provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam in the early hours of Saturday despite warnings from Tehran that any adventurism by the Zionist regime would face a harsh response.Iran announced its air defense system intercepted and countered the attacks, with limited damage reported in some areas. At least five, including four Iran's Army's servicemen as well as a civilian, have been martyred in Israel's attacks against the country. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a statement following the attack by the Zionist regime in some parts of the country, saying Israeli fighter jets flew through Iraq’s airspace to conduct airstrikes on Iran “in a blatant and illegal act”.Israel’s Air Force “used airspace controlled by the US terrorist military in Iraq to launch long-range missiles from a distance of 100km from Iran’s borders", it added.“These missiles – equipped with lightweight warheads, one-fifth the size of Iranian ballistic missile warheads – were aimed at several border radar installations in Ilam, Khuzestan, and areas around Tehran," the statement read. The statement said following the timely action of Iran's air defense systems, the damage that was caused to some radar systems was "limited" and those systems "were repaired quickly".
It noted that a considerable number of the projectiles fired were intercepted and the enemy’s warplanes were prevented from entering the country’s airspace.Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has stressed that the Zionist regime’s miscalculation should be thwarted, and the Israelis need to understand the power, determination and innovation of the Iranian nation. He emphasized that Israel’s evil act should “neither be exaggerated nor downplayed".Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also stated that Tehran is not seeking war but will give an appropriate response to Israel's latest assault.“We do not seek war, but we will defend the rights of our nation and country. We will give an appropriate response to the aggression of the Zionist regime,” Pezeshkian said.Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also condemned the Israeli assault against the country’s military installations as a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, especially the principle that prohibits threats or use of force against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries. It also defended Tehran’s right “to defend itself against external aggressive moves”.
Washington warned Tehran that if it undertakes any further retaliatory acts against Israel or US personnel in the region, “there will be severe consequences”.“We will not hesitate to act in self-defence. Let there be no confusion. The US does not want to see further escalation. We believe this should be the end of the direct exchange of fire between Israel and Iran,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated.#Iran#Israel
