Putin Sees Maintaining Stability as One of SCO’s Priorities

Maintaining stability in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states and along their borders is one of the organization's priorities, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, addressing an SCO summit in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
"Of course, maintaining stability in the member states and along their borders is seen as one of the SCO’s priorities. Russia supports the draft program to counter extremism, which has been prepared for this meeting, and is ready to take part in implementing the document," Putin noted, TASS reported. He also highlighted the importance of two agreements submitted for signing at the summit, which establish a universal SCO center in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, designed to respond to the entire range of the current challenges and threats, and an anti-drug center in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe. "We expect the two centers to begin operations as soon as possible," Putin stressed.Putin also said that the economy in the member countries of the SCO is advancing despite global difficulties and even faster than the global average."Within the SCO, trade, economic, investment and financial cooperation is actively advancing. It is significant that in the context of ongoing difficulties in the global economy, the combined GDP of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization states in 2024 increased by an average of more than 5%. This is higher than global figures," Putin said.In particular, industrial production increased by 4.6%, cooperation is expanding in energy, finance, agriculture and food security, infrastructure, high technology, innovation and transport, he added.
Putin also voiced support for the Global Governance Initiative, put forward by Chinese leader Xi, at an expanded meeting of the SCO.He stressed that since its foundation in 2001, the SCO "has been actively participating in efforts to foster an environment of peace, security, trust and cooperation on the Eurasian continent". "That said, we have carefully listened to what Mr. Xi Jinping proposes to do to create a new and more effective system of global governance," the Russian president noted.According to him, China’s proposals are relevant in a situation where "some countries stubbornly seek to use pressure in international affairs". "Russia supports President Xi Jinping initiative and is interested in launching specific discussions of the proposals put forward by our Chinese partners," the Russian leader emphasized.Putin expressed confidence that the SCO was the most suitable to lead efforts to establish a more fair and equal system of global governance.
"This system, based on the supremacy of international law, would take into account the interests of as wide a range of countries as possible and offer them opportunities for sustainable development and security," the Russian president concluded. The SCO was founded on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai. Initially, it included six countries - Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In 2017, India and Pakistan joined the SCO. Iran and Belarus became members in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
