Israel Army Says Lacks Over 10,000 Soldiers Including Around 6,000 Combat Soldiers

Israel's military on Friday said it lacked over 10,000 soldiers, including around 6,000 for combat units, as it pressed an intensified campaign in the Gaza Strip.
The army "lacks over 10,000 soldiers, including about 6,000 combat soldiers. This is a genuine operational need, and that's why we're taking all necessary steps", Army Spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said in a televised press conference when asked about the conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredi) into the army.On Thursday, Israeli Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara announced that the army will issue over 50,000 mandatory conscription orders to ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students in July. The announcement came after her meeting with senior Israeli army officials.Baharav-Miara stressed that the matter of drafting Haredim “is not progressing sufficiently, as the army urgently needs new recruits, which requires imposing personal sanctions on draft evaders”.Israeli Army Chief Eyal Zamir approved “new operational plans” on Friday aimed at expanding the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.Last week, he ordered the expansion of offensive to include additional areas in both Northern and Southern Gaza.Israel, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a genocidal offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
