MP: Caspian Sea Non-Negotiable; Shared Interests of All Littoral States Must Be Secured
A member of the Iranian Parliament’s Presiding Board emphasized that the Caspian Sea is non-negotiable in every respect and that the interests of all surrounding countries must be secured jointly.
Somayeh Rafiei, speaking in an interview with a Fars News Agency correspondent, said: “The Caspian Sea is truly non-negotiable from every perspective—ecological, economic, and national security—and the interests of all the countries bordering it must necessarily be secured together.”Rafiei continued: “The National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the parliament will examine this matter as the primary commission, and a number of other commissions will also participate as secondary commissions in the review. She stated: “The Caspian Sea is of extreme importance to us and is no different from the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, or the Sea of Oman; the Caspian Sea is Iran’s honor.”Referring to the environmental pollution of the Caspian Sea caused by oil extraction activities of certain countries, Rafiei stressed the necessity of pursuing legal action regarding Caspian pollution.She said that, given that not all member states have played an equal role in creating Caspian pollution, Iran can also pursue the matter of oil pollution, since Iran has played no part in generating this type of pollution.
