Source Reveals Final Changes to Iran-US Understanding on Strait of Hormuz

A knowledgeable source has disclosed significant amendments to the final text of the Iran-US understanding, saying the revised language explicitly recognizes the role of Iran and Oman in determining the future of maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz and includes US acceptance, for the first time, of Iran's right to collect fees for maritime services in the strategic waterway.
Speaking to Fars News Agency, the source said the final-stage revisions to the text of the understanding placed explicit emphasis on Iranian-Omani sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz."In the final moments of the negotiations, the text of the memorandum underwent changes that definitively and explicitly emphasized the exercise of Iran-Oman sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz," the source said. The source added that previous versions of the text contained terminology intended to guarantee Iran's authority and arrangements in the strait, but the revised wording now states that the "future administration of maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz" will be "determined" by Iran and Oman.According to the source, the explicit use of the term "maritime services" means that the United States has effectively accepted Iran's right to collect related service fees. The source further pointed to another section of the understanding, which states that Iran will accept toll-free passage for ships for "only" 60 days."This principle is repeated elsewhere in the text. Iran will accept the passage of ships without charge only for 60 days. This means the United States has accepted the principle of collecting fees, while securing only a 60-day exemption from Iran," the source said.
The source also stated that after the 60-day period, the Islamic Republic of Iran intends to generate revenue from commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz by providing safety, navigation, environmental and insurance services, using the proceeds to support the country's economic development. The source concluded by emphasizing the importance of cooperation from Oman, which shares control of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the necessary negotiations had been conducted to secure Omani support for the arrangement.
