IRGC Confirms 25 Ships Passed Through Strait of Hormuz
The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced on Saturday that 25 ships, including oil tankers, container ships and other commercial vessels, passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours after obtaining permission and under coordination provided by Tehran.
According to a statement released by the IRGC Navy, the ships crossed the strategic waterway following authorization and with security provided by the elite force.
The passage of dozens of ships in recent days marks a major increase compared to transit rates in the vital waterway since the beginning of US-Israeli assault against Tehran in late February, which prompted Iranian military to take control of the waterway and impose restrictions on shipping through it. The restrictions have caused a major surge in international energy and commodity prices, as the Strait is responsible for a fifth of global oil demand. Iran announced after a ceasefire was announced to halt the offensive in early April that it would continue to control transit via the Strait of Hormuz by banning or restricting adversarial ships and charging tolls on others seeking safe passage. Last month, the United States launched a military campaign supposedly aimed at forcibly reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but it was forced to stop the maneuver amid Iran’s steadfast resilience against American piracy and threats to maritime security and stability. The IRGC requires ship owners to disclose details including the value of the ship's cargo, the flag, its origin and destination, the registered owner and manager, and nationalities of the crew, according to documents sent to shipping industry sources by Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
The IRGC statement added that the intelligent control of the Strait of Hormuz continues with full strength despite the insecurity created following the aggression of the "terrorist American army" in the waterway.
