Date Set for Sixth Round of Iran-US Negotiations

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqaei said the fresh round of indirect talks with the United States over Iran's nuclear program will be held on Saturday in Oman.
Baqaei said on Monday that following consultations, preparations are underway for the next round of indirect talks with Washington on Sunday in Oman’s capital city, Muscat.Last Saturday, Tehran announced it has received “elements” of a proposal by Washington for a nuclear agreement.Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi stated that the US proposal for a new nuclear deal submitted through mediator Oman has “many ambiguities and questions".He added Tehran will provide "an appropriate and considered response", based on our principled positions and with the interests of the Iranian people in mind.Earlier Monday, Baqaei told a press conference Iran had been developing a proposal of its own that is “nearing finalization,” describing the proposal as “a reasonable one".“Our advice to the Americans is to take advantage of this opportunity,” he stressed. The spokesperson regarded the removal of the sanctions imposed by Washington as a serious demand on the part of Tehran.“Do not doubt that this matter has been raised decisively multiple times. Iran's most important demand is the effective removal of sanctions. The reason why this issue has not been properly addressed in the US proposal is something that they have been asked about,” he emphasized.
Later in the day, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi said Tehran’s response to Washingon's proposal is being finalized.Takht-Ravanchi, stated the response will be a “reasonable and coherent” document that could help sustain ongoing diplomatic endeavours toward a final accord. He added that Iran believes the answer is logical and that the final version is expected to be delivered to Oman within a few days for transmission to US officials.Takht-Ravanchi stressed that the Iranian proposal is not simplistic or dismissive. “Our proposal is certainly not a one-liner or a short paragraph that can be easily rejected. It is a structured plan that reflects our seriousness and is grounded in clear principles”, the deputy foreign minister maintained. The diplomat clarified that the Iranian submission is not meant to be a comprehensive or lengthy agreement, instead, it serves as a framework for initial understanding.“This is not a full-fledged treaty. It’s a structured framework. If the core of this framework is accepted, more detailed negotiations can follow,” he continued.
Iran and the US have so far held five rounds of negotiations, mediated by Oman, with the purpose of reaching an accord on Tehran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions. Three rounds of the two countries’ negotiations were held in Muscat, while the remaining two rounds were held in the Italian capital, Rome. However, the talks have faced an obstacle over the US demand that Iran should stop enriching uranium under any new accord.Iranian officials have firmly dismissed the demand, and made it clear that under no circumstances will Tehran forgo its nuclear rights, including the right to enrichment for peaceful purposes.
