Migratory Storks Find Refuge in Iran’s Kurdistan
Nestled in the heart of Iran’s Kurdistan province, the city of Marivan is renowned for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. Yet, it is the annual arrival of thousands of migratory storks that truly sets this region apart.
Home to the breathtaking Zarivar Lake, Marivan is recognized as the world’s second-largest stork habitat. Each spring, white storks travel thousands of kilometers from warmer regions, stopping in the villages of Bilow and Darreh Tefi near the lake.
The surrounding oak forests and the warm hospitality of the locals make this area an ideal nesting ground. These graceful birds remain here until late autumn, adding a unique charm to Kurdistan’s natural beauty.
