Iran Dismisses Report of Proposing Direct Talks with US
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqaei refuted a recent media report and the speculations about a proposal by Tehran on direct negotiations with Washington and an imminent meeting between Iranian and US presidents, Masoud Pezeshkian and Donald Trump.
Baqaei on Wednesday rejected as “fabricated and baseless” recent media reports that Tehran has proposed direct talks with Washington and that a meeting between the presidents of the two countries is to happen soon. All updates on Iran’s diplomatic activities, including indirect negotiations with the US, are communicated transparently, professionally, and in a timely manner by the foreign ministry, the spokesperson told Press TV.Analysts say Israeli media are seeking to negatively influence the discussions between Iran and the US.
Earlier, an Israeli news outlet claimed that Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi, who is the lead negotiator of Iran in the talks, has got in touch with chief US negotiator Steve Witkoff and asked for direct talks with him.Iran has ruled out the possibility of engaging in direct negotiations with the US, saying Washington’s continued use of pressure and threats was fundamentally incompatible with meaningful diplomacy. Officials have stressed Tehran’s unwavering stance on the need for indirect, mediated dialogue in light of longstanding Washington's violations of international norms.Iran stresses it has always supported diplomacy and engaged in negotiations in good faith. However, it reminds at the same time that pressure and intimidation tactics have never yielded results as far as dealing with Tehran is concerned.Iran and the US have already held three rounds of indirect talks in Muscat and Rome on April 12, 19 and 26, mediated by Oman, aimed at sealing an accord over Tehran's nuclear program. The fourth round had initially been scheduled for May 3 in the Italian capital. But, it was postponed.
Baqaei has also dismissed recent rumors suggesting an "upcoming meeting" between President Pezeshkian and President Trump in the Saudi capital Riyadh. He described the claims as “fabricated and baseless”.
