Iran's FM to Visit Pakistan, India Amid Tensions Between Nuclear-Armed Neighbours

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi is scheduled to visit Islamabad and New Delhi in the coming days to discuss regional and international developments, as tensions have escalated between the two nuclear powers following an attack on tourists in Kashmir.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei told Press TV that Araqchi plans to visit Pakistan and India within days as part of Tehran's ongoing consultations with regional countries. The top diplomat will arrive in Islamabad on Monday to hold consultations with high-ranking Pakistani officials, Baqaei said. The talks will focus on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing the latest developments at the regional and international levels, he added.
The trip came amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly attack in Pahalgam in Southern Kashmir that killed 26 civilians. In the wake of the attack, India accused its neighbour of aiding and abetting armed militants in their cross-border incursions – a claim Pakistan has vehemently denied. After the attack, India and Pakistan unleashed a host of measures against each other, with Pakistan closing its airspace to Indian airlines, and India suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty that regulates water-sharing from the Indus River and its tributaries, and halting all imports, suspending mail services, and denying port access to Pakistani vessels. The two nuclear-armed countries, who both fully claim Kashmir while partly governing it, have also exchanged gunfire for nine consecutive nights along the Line of Control in Kashmir, according to the Indian military.Islamabad has claimed that it has “credible intelligence” that New Delhi intends to launch military action, and has stressed it is prepared to respond.
Baqaei also confirmed that the Iranian foreign minister will pay an official visit to India later in the week.
