Iranian President Welcomes Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Treaty

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed the long-anticipated peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to fostering regional peace and stability.
In a phone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Sunday, Pezeshkian congratulated both nations on reaching the agreement.“Iran has always supported the establishment of peace, convergence, and stability in the region, particularly among neighboring countries, while upholding territorial integrity,” he said.Armenia and Azerbaijan announced on Thursday that they had agreed on the text of a peace treaty to formally end nearly four decades of conflict, with Yerevan relinquishing its claim to Karabakh. The long-disputed region of Karabakh was the focal point of two devastating wars between Armenia and Azerbaijan—in the 1990s and again in 2020. The region, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, was retaken by Azerbaijani forces in a 24-hour military operation.During their call, Pezeshkian highlighted the strong and growing ties between Iran and Armenia, urging senior officials from both countries to accelerate the implementation of bilateral agreements across various sectors.
Pashinyan, in turn, briefed Pezeshkian on the finalized draft of the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the completion of negotiations. He also expressed gratitude for Iran’s support of the treaty. The Armenian prime minister emphasized his country’s commitment to continuing negotiations and consultations to ensure the agreement’s successful implementation and to strengthen regional cooperation. He voiced hope that the peace treaty would be signed and enforced in the near future, while also commending the Iranian government’s efforts to enhance bilateral relations, stressing Armenia’s readiness to implement agreements with Iran.
