Iranians Mark US Downing of Flight 655 with Floral Tribute
Iranians marked the 38th anniversary of the downing of Iran Air Flight 655 by the United States with a floral tribute at the site of the tragedy, honoring the victims who lost their lives in the incident over the Persian Gulf. [PHOTOS]
The Iranian passenger plane, an Airbus A300B2 of Iran’s flag carrier, Iran Air, was downed by the US cruiser, the USS Vincennes, at 10:17 am local time (UTC 0330) on July 3, 1988.All 274 passengers and 16 crew members on board were martyred when the USS Vincennes fired two SM-2MR surface-to-air missiles at it, one of which hit the plane.
The commemorative ceremony was held on Friday, when participants gathered at the crash site and cast flowers into the waters of the Persian Gulf in memory of the 290 passengers and crew members killed in the attack. The annual tribute honors the victims of one of the deadliest incidents involving a civilian airliner and commemorates their memory with prayers and floral offerings.
