Macron Appeals for Calm as Lyon Sees Mass Rally After Activist’s Death

Many demonstrators wore surgical masks and sunglasses to conceal their identities, chanting slogans including “we are at home” and “antifa assassin,” as the protest underscored growing political tensions in France.
President Emmanuel Macron called for calm ahead of the rallies and said he would convene a ministerial meeting next week to address violence linked to extremist groups.
Former prime minister Dominique de Villepin described the killing of the 23-year-old activist as “France’s Charlie Kirk moment,” drawing a comparison to last year’s killing of a conservative activist in the United States.
