They said residents buried victims nearby after intense fighting and RSF checkpoints made movement unsafe. Many bodies showed advanced decomposition, with causes of death linked to crossfire, starvation, and lack of medical care. Officials reported that 15,000 bodies had been collected so far, with a similar number likely remaining. They added that a shortage of forensic specialists and funding hindered proper reburial efforts and that exhumation and cemetery transfers would continue for weeks amid persistent challenges.
