IRGC Navy: Strait of Hormuz Under Iran’s ‘Complete, Decisive’ Control
The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy says the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains under the “complete and decisive” control of Iranian forces, dismissing claims by US officials that the vital waterway is open.
“The control exercised by the Islamic Republic’s forces over the strategic Strait of Hormuz is complete and decisive,” the IRGC Navy said in a statement on Friday. The statement described US officials’ claims that the strait remains open as “an outright lie,” saying such assertions are aimed solely at influencing oil prices and concealing their defeats. The IRGC Navy stressed that the strait remains closed to vessels seeking to transit without prior coordination with the Islamic Republic. It added that the restrictions would remain in place until the end of the United States’ “terrorist army’s aggression” against Iran and until the relevant obligations have been fulfilled.Iran closed the strategic waterway following the launch of the latest round of unprovoked US-Israeli aggression against the country on February 28.Under a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States in June, the two sides had agreed on a 60-day period for reopening the strait. However, Tehran later reestablished the closure, following US violations of the understanding.Iran has said the reopening of the waterway is contingent on the fulfillment of a number of prerequisites, including an end to US interference in regional maritime traffic.
