Iran Says US-Israeli Strikes on Energy Facilities Caused Cross-Border Environmental Pollution

The head of Iran's Department of Environment said that US and Israeli strikes on Iran's petrochemical facilities and oil refineries during the recent imposed war caused water, soil, and air pollution, the effects of which were not confined to Iran but also impacted parts of the region.
Shina Ansari made the remarks on the sidelines of the Ninth High-Level Committee on Environment and Development of the members of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), during a meeting with Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP.Ansari said that sanctions have restricted the Islamic Republic of Iran's access to modern technologies, financial resources, and international facilities envisaged under international environmental conventions, making it more difficult to address environmental challenges. At the same time, Ansari stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently remained committed to its international obligations and, as a party to 15 international environmental conventions, considers itself bound to implement the requirements of those conventions.Emphasizing that environmental protection is impossible without peace and international cooperation, she called on the United Nations Under-Secretary-General to encourage the United Nations and its specialized agencies to play a more active and effective role in promoting peace, stability, and the reduction of tensions worldwide, particularly in West Asia.During the meeting, Alisjahbana also praised the Islamic Republic of Iran for its leadership in advancing regional programs related to dust and sand storms.
Referring to the tragic consequences of the US and Israeli military aggression against Iran, she expressed hope that, with the restoration of peace and stability in the region and the continued constructive role of the Islamic Republic of Iran, positive initiatives in the fields of natural disasters, dust and sand storms, and land subsidence would be implemented in cooperation with Iran in the near future.
