Iran Can Replace $25B UAE Trade by Developing New Markets, Transit Hubs
Alireza Peymanpak, former head of Iran's Trade Promotion Organization, stated that under current circumstances, Iran can benefit from developing new markets such as Eurasia, utilizing Turkey's transit hub, and leveraging new corridors through Pakistan and China's Western rail route to replace the $25 billion share of its trade with the UAE.
In an interview with Fars News Agency, Peymanpak referred to the trade volume between Iran and the UAE and said: "Our trade balance with the UAE stands at 25 billion dollars-15 billion in imports and $10 billion in exports. However, imports directly from the UAE itself are not substantial; only about 10% of that figure originates from the UAE. The remaining 90% of our imports come from other countries but are re-exported through the UAE, effectively changing origin before entering Iran."He added: "To change this situation, we can either purchase goods directly or define new corridors."Referring to Turkey's position in global trade, the former head of the Trade Promotion Organization noted: "Turkey's foreign trade exceeds $600 billion, while our share is roughly $10–12 billion — less than two percent."He further stated: "Turkey is a logistics hub, and you can import many goods through that route, similar to the UAE. Regarding Eurasia, we can create new markets for our products and also import from them."Peymanpak said: "Consider that over $10 billion of imports from Eurasian countries alone are in the food industry and agricultural products. Over $30 billion are in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. Another $50–60 billion are in the clothing supply chain, home appliances, and related sectors. All of these represent excellent opportunities for us to enter."
He added: "According to projections by our colleagues at the Institute for Trade Studies and Research, within a two- to three-year horizon, we can increase our current 5-billion dollar trade with Eurasia to 15 billion dollars— a threefold leap."According to Peymanpak, "In the area of corridors, we can also benefit from Oman and Pakistan. Likewise, China's land and rail route is a highly suitable path. Approximately 20,000 train units come from China each year. These trains travel along the East–West corridor, passing through Kazakhstan and Russia, delivering goods to Azerbaijan, the European Union, and the Western region."
