Donald Trump’s threatening remarks on the eve of possible negotiations with Iran indicate a pre-designed scenario with a “good cop, bad cop” role division.
While media outlets close to the US administration are trying to portray J.D. Vance, the Vice President and head of the US negotiating team, as a peace-seeking figure opposed to war, Donald Trump’s statements ahead of the potential talks have been entirely threatening.Nevertheless, the Iranian negotiating team has announced that two fundamental preconditions — a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s frozen funds — have been agreed upon through intermediaries before any negotiations. For this reason, the Iranian team continues to use the term “possible negotiations,” and nothing has been finalized yet.The US and Israel are trying to confine the Lebanon ceasefire solely to the Beirut area and exclude Southern Lebanon from its scope. The recent tweet by the Lebanese Prime Minister — stressing that “the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel is being carried out between themselves, not between the US and Iran” — clearly indicates that this issue has been dictated by the US and Israel to the Lebanese government.After several delays in his own deadlines, Trump finally explicitly stated that he accepts negotiations and a ceasefire based on Iran’s 10-point proposal. These proposals are to be the focus of the talks. However, yesterday it became clear that Iran has deemed the two aforementioned preconditions necessary even for starting these very negotiations, and the other side has agreed to them.
