FM: Most Elements of Potential Iran-US Deal Agreed
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi characterized the atmosphere surrounding the third round of Iran-US nuclear talks in Geneva as serious, noting that the two sides have reached common ground on most components of a possible agreement.
In an exclusive interview with Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Thursday, Araqchi said the indirect negotiations with the US delegation in Geneva have progressed into a more substantive and focused stage. He explained that the third round was markedly more serious and extended in duration compared to earlier sessions, with both parties examining the principal elements that could underpin a future deal. The top Iranian diplomat stated that there is consensus on the majority of these elements, though working out how to implement them will require further detailed discussions. To that end, he said it was agreed that Iranian experts would meet with the International Atomic Energy Agency next Monday to address certain technical issues and clarify outstanding details, paving the way for subsequent political-level decisions.Araqchi added that the next round of talks is expected to take place in roughly a week, once draft documents are prepared and necessary reviews completed. The precise date, he said, will be finalized through upcoming contacts.Addressing ongoing regional developments and military pressure and threats, Araqchi stressed that Washington must choose between diplomacy and escalation. He argued that Iran’s nuclear issue cannot be settled through military means, recalling that previous attempts had failed to produce results. According to him, even with maximum pressure, no progress was achieved.
He concluded that the only viable path forward is dialogue and negotiation, which are currently in progress, and that it is therefore essential for the United States to avoid actions, rhetoric, or behavior that heighten tensions and undermine the diplomatic process.
