Iran–Russia Joint Naval Drill to Safeguard Commercial Shipping, Combat Maritime Terrorism
A joint naval exercise between the naval forces of Iran and Russia will be held on Thursday in the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean, with the aim of protecting commercial vessels and oil tankers, as well as countering maritime terrorism.
Rear Admiral Hassan Maqsoudlou, spokesperson for the joint naval drill between the navies of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation, stated that the exercise will be hosted by the Iranian Navy in the Southern port city of Bandar Abbas. He noted that its primary objective is to enhance maritime security and promote sustainable navigation cooperation in the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean.Maqsoudlou added that expanding joint maritime cooperation and strengthening relations between the two navies in the planning and execution of combined operations are among the key goals of the drill.According to the spokesperson, fostering convergence and coordination in joint actions to counter activities that threaten maritime security and safety constitutes one of the main pillars of the exercise.The drill is also designed to deepen friendly ties, increase regional cooperation—particularly among neighboring countries—and reinforce the role of regional states in ensuring and maintaining maritime security and navigation.Captain First Rank Alexei Sergeev, commander of the Russian naval flotilla, for his part, emphasized the close and friendly relations between the two sides, stating that the current level of interaction and cooperation demonstrates their ability to jointly manage and resolve numerous maritime and coastal challenges.
The Russian Navy’s helicopter carrier Stoyevsky has entered Iran’s southern waters within the framework of joint maritime cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation. The vessel is participating in the joint naval exercise aimed at enhancing operational coordination and exchanging military expertise.
