Iranian President Reiterates Historical Designation of Persian Gulf Amid US Dispute
Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, reiterated the historical name of the Persian Gulf following renewed tensions over reports that US President Donald Trump might use the fake term "Arabian Gulf" during an upcoming Middle East visit.
In a post on the social media platform X, President Pezeshkian shared an image of Iran’s flag accompanied by the hashtag #PersianGulf, stating, "The Persian Gulf will remain the Persian Gulf."The remarks came after an Associated Press report cited unnamed US officials claiming that Trump planned to officially adopt the term “Arabian Gulf” during his trip to Saudi Arabia, allegedly due to pressure from Arab allies.Trump later told journalists he would decide on the matter during his visit, saying, “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.”The potential shift in terminology prompted swift backlash from Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer qalibaf, who condemned the move.The name "Persian Gulf" has been used in historical texts for centuries, and Iran has consistently defended its legitimacy.
