Pro-Palestine Iranian National Still Detained by French Police, Denied Consular Services
Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian citizen and supporter of Palestine detained in France, has been denied consular services and has not even been allowed to contact her family by phone.
This comes as the Iranian Embassy in Paris is following up on the situation of Ms. Esfandiari, who is a university professor in France. Esfandiari has been residing in France for the past eight years and has now been detained by French police for over 40 days on charges of supporting Palestine. The denial of consular services and phone contact to Esfandiari is a clear violation of France's obligations under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. A reporter from Fars News Agency has learned that the French government has promised to arrange a consular visit in the coming week. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqaei, while confirming Esfandiari’s arrest, added that she is an activist supporting the Palestinian people and had apparently published content in solidarity with the oppressed people of Gaza.
