Iran Slams Israel for Exploiting Islamophobia to Justify Crimes, Apartheid
Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani condemned Israel’s attempts to justify its crimes, atrocities, and apartheid policies by falsely linking Islam to terrorism.
Speaking at the High-Level Meeting to Commemorate the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on Friday, Iravani highlighted the ongoing aggressions faced by Palestinians under Israeli occupation, stressing that the world continues to witness these daily violations. He stated that Israel, as an occupying regime, along with its allies, persistently seeks to excuse its crimes and oppressive policies by fabricating a false connection between Islam and terrorism.Iravani also voiced concerns over the rise of Islamophobia in several Western countries, citing incidents of violence, defamation, and desecration of Islamic values, sacred sites, and the Holy Quran under the pretext of freedom of expression. He urged nations to enact laws criminalizing violence and hatred against religious symbols and holy books and called for collective action to combat Islamophobia.Reaffirming Iran’s stance, Iravani emphasized the Islamic Republic’s unwavering commitment to countering Islamophobia and religious extremism.“The Islamic Republic of Iran expresses deep concern over the widespread anti-Muslim campaigns, including the use of media and social media platforms to spread hostility,” he said.He warned that such campaigns have “detrimental effects” on Muslims worldwide, especially those living under foreign occupation or as minority communities.
Iravani also referenced UN General Assembly Resolution 76/254, adopted three years ago, which he said underscores the global commitment to addressing Islamophobia. He noted that last year’s resolution on “measures to combat Islamophobia” reinforced the urgent need for legislative and policy action to eliminate all forms of anti-Muslim discrimination.“The resolution highlights the critical need to raise awareness and combat the spread of hate speech, including the implementation of necessary legislative and policy measures against Islamophobia,” he stated. In his concluding remarks, Iravani welcomed the appointment of H.E. Mr. Moratinos as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia and expressed Iran’s readiness to actively collaborate with him in this mission.
