Iran Mocks Trump's 20% Strait of Hormuz Cargo Fee
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi mocked US President Donald Trump's 20% tariff on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, saying the rate was too high and that Tehran would be fair.
"POTUS is absolutely right. Whoever provides secure and safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated for this service," Araqchi wrote on X on Monday.
Earlier, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he would be reinstating a blockade of Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and would charge any other ships for passage, amid the ongoing escalation with Tehran that threatens to derail endeavours towards lasting peace. He claimed that the US would be the “guardian” of the strategic waterway and would charge commercial shippers 20% of the value of their cargo to compensate the US for securing the strait.
"Iran has always been the GUARDIAN of the Strait and will remain so FOREVER," Araqchi stressed. "20% is of course too much. We will be fair," the top diplomat added.
