Iran: US Revocation of Oil Sanctions Waiver Violation of Islamabad MoU
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the United States’ revocation of its waiver for Iranian oil sanctions as a violation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two sides, cautioning that Washington bears full responsibility for any consequences arising from the breach.
“Less than 20 days after the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was signed, the announcement revoking the general license issued on June 21 is yet another indication of the US administration’s bad faith, inconsistency, and unreliability,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.It added that the revocation came after the United States had already committed both major and minor violations of the MoU over the past 20 days, either directly or through Israel’s actions in Lebanon.
The US Treasury Department announced Tuesday that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) revoked Iran-related General License X, which had authorized the production, delivery and sale of Iranian oil under Washington’s interim agreement with Tehran.The move came after a series of recent attacks on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, including a Qatari LNG carrier and a Saudi oil tanker, raising fears that shipowners and regional producers may avoid the vital waterway.The renewed escalation has put the interim US-Iran peace deal at risk and revived concerns over fresh disruptions to global energy supplies.
The ministry emphasized that Iran has made every endeavour to fulfill its commitments under the MoU, “with good faith and using all its capacities”, while Washington, acting in line with its longstanding practice, has sought to justify its own violations under various pretexts.The ministry warned of the consequences of the US violations, emphasizing that Iran will take any measures it deems necessary to safeguard its national security and interests.
