IRGC Warns Ships Away from Unauthorized Strait of Hormuz Route
The Islamic Revolution Guard Corp (IRGC) Navy denied a new shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any vessel using it will be in danger.
The IRGC Navy on Thursday cautioned that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is only possible via routes officially designated by Tehran. The IRGC issued a statement, describing any alternative transit routes as "unacceptable and completely dangerous"."Traffic of vessels outside these routes is prohibited, and we warn against any traffic outside the communicated routes," it added.
Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz to its enemies and their allies after the US-Israeli onslaught in late February. Iranian authorities began enforcing much stricter controls following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a blockade targeting Iranian vessels and ports. The Strait of Hormuz is responsible for a fifth of the global oil supply, and Iran’s restrictions have caused a major surge in international oil and commodity prices since they were imposed in April. In mid-June, Iran and the United States finalized the text of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war. The MoU contributed to a temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to the US naval blockade against Iran.Tehran has stressed that the chokepoint would not return to the status it enjoyed prior to February 28, when the United States and the Israeli regime waged a war against Iran.
The statement further emphasized that coordination with the IRGC Navy is "mandatory" for transit through the strategic waterway.
