Iran: Defensive Attacks on Israeli Targets Legitimate Self-Defense Under UN Charter
Iran’s Foreign Ministry stressed that Tehran’s defensive attacks against military targets in the occupied territories were carried out within the framework of inherent self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, following repeated ceasefire violations by the Zionist regime.
In a statement released on Monday, the ministry said the strikes came in response to Israel’s persistent breaches of the April ceasefire, including its collaboration with the US military in attacks on Iranian ships and targets in Southern Iran over the past two weeks, as well as US‑backed maritime piracy against the Iranian nation.Iran emphasized that the ceasefire in Lebanon is an inseparable part of the April truce accord, and that the United States bears direct responsibility for Israeli violations and any resulting escalation in the region.
Tensions have escalated in the region since the United States and Israel unleashed a war against Iran in late February.The Iranian Armed Forces unleashed 100 waves of successful retaliatory aerial attacks against sensitive and strategic American and Israeli targets throughout the region.Forty days after the war, an Islamabad-brokered ceasefire between Tehran and Washington went into effect. The two sides have been holding intermittent negotiations to end the war permanently.Despite the truce, Israel has continued its onslaught against Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, while the US has maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports.Iran has consistently insisted that any final accord must include a comprehensive halt to hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.
The ministry warned that any malicious adventure by the Zionist regime against Lebanon or Iran will be met with a crushing and comprehensive response from Iran’s brave armed forces.“The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates its nation’s serious determination to decisively defend its security and national interests wherever it deems necessary,” the statement read.
