UN Mission Slams US Policy over Anti-Iran Resolution on Hormuz Strait
The Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations lashed out at the United States for using “coercion” to rally support for its politically-motivated draft resolution targeting Tehran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Writing on X on Thursday, the mission condemned as “absurd and deceptive” the US bid to portray the number of co-sponsors of its anti-Iran resolution as broad international backing and proof of Iran’s isolation.“No number of coerced co-sponsorships can legitimize Washington’s ongoing internationally wrongful acts against Iran, including maritime blockade, attacks on and illegal seizure of Iranian commercial vessels, and hostage-taking of their crews in a manner resembling piracy,” it said.“Everyone knows that many members joined the draft resolution under political pressure, coercion, and even threats," it added.
The United States and the Israeli regime waged a war against Iran in late February. The Iranian Armed Forces responded with 100 waves of retaliatory strikes, codenamed Operation True Promise 4, carried out hundreds of ballistic and hypersonic missiles as well as drone attacks against sensitive and strategic American and Israeli targets throughout the region.A ceasefire took effect in early April through Pakistani mediation, but negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce an accord due to excessive demands and shifting goalposts by the US delegation. Later, the truce was unilaterally extended by Washington without a set deadline.Since the onset of war, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz only to hostile vessels – those directly or indirectly linked to Washington and the Zionist regime. It began exercising far stricter controls last month after US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of Iranian vessels and ports.Tehran stresses it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the blockade is lifted and the war permanently ends.Iranian officials have warned that any new onslaught will be met with a far more crushing and devastating response than before.
The mission also emphasized that the US claims of broad backing for the anti-Iran resolution are nothing more than a desperate effort to manufacture legitimacy for predetermined political objectives, undermine the credibility of the UN Security Council, and provide political cover for unlawful actions.
