Iranian FM Holds Phone Call with Regional Counterparts over Peace Talks with US
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi on Monday held separate telephone conversations with his counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman regarding the US-Israeli war on Tehran which began in late February.
The Iranian foreign minister briefed his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan on the latest developments in the region following the announcement of a temporary ceasefire and risks arising from the United States’ provocative acts.He stressed Tehran’s responsible approach and good-will in accepting the ceasefire and holding talks with Washington.“Unfortunately, we witnessed the continuation of the American side’s excessive demands in the negotiations and this obstructed any result,” the minister added.Farhan, for his part, said Saudi Arabia supports diplomatic bids, expressing hope that the process would bring about a permanent end to the war and restore regional security and stability.
Also on Monday, the Iranian minister held a telephone conversation with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.During the call, Araqchi said that Iran has acted decisively in defending its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.Iran, he added, entered the diplomatic process to preserve its national interests and protect regional peace. The Qatari foreign minister also voiced his country’s support for mediation bids to end the war.
Araqchi and his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi also held a phone call on Tuesday, reviewing the latest developments across the region.During their conversation, the two foreign ministers discussed the Pakistani-mediated talks between Iran and the US held in Islamabad earlier this week. The US and Israel conducted a fresh round of aerial aggression on Iran in late February, some eight months after they carried out unprovoked assault on the country. The strikes led to the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, and hundreds of people, including women and children, as well as military commanders.Iran began to swiftly and firmly retaliate against the raids by firing barrages of missiles and drone attacks on the Israeli-occupied territories as well as on US bases in regional countries.
The US and Iran agreed on Wednesday to a Pakistan-brokered two-week ceasefire following Washington’s acceptance of a 10-point proposal from Tehran. On Saturday, Tehran and Washington held talks in Islamabad—the first high-level negotiations between two sides since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran. The discussion focused on resolving tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear program, among other issues, although the discussions ended without an accord.American Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, stated after the negotiations that it was now up to Iran to accept what he called the “final, best” offer from the United States. But Iranian officials dismissed the framing, accusing Washington of imposing excessive demands during the negotiations and failing to show the necessary flexibility to reach an accord.Iran has stressed that sending a delegation to Pakistan shows Tehran’s resolve to negotiate with Washington, though the country's Armed Forces' “fingers would remain on the trigger”.
