Iran's President: US “Hegemonic Attitude” Hampers Peace Agreement
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed on Sunday the biggest obstacle to reaching a fair deal between Tehran and Washington was the double standards and hegemonic approach of the American side during the negotiations in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
During a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran is fully prepared to reach a balanced and just accord that ensures lasting peace, security and stability in West Asia.He noted that the double standards and the hegemonic policy of the American side hindered a peace accord between two sides during the recent talks in Islamabad.Stating that Iran’s red line is the national interests and rights of the Iranian people, Pezeshkian added, “If the United States adheres to international legal frameworks, reaching an agreement is not out of reach.”In addition, the president described the Persian Gulf littoral states as Iran’s brothers, expressing regret over the US use of military bases and facilities on their territory for military onslaught against Tehran.
Iran and the US have failed to reach a deal after high-stakes talks in the Pakistani capital, with Vice President JD Vance noting that Tehran refused to accept Washington’s terms after 21 hours of discussions in Islamabad.Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei stressed on Sunday that no one had expected the talks with the US to reach an agreement in a single session. On Saturday, an informed source told FNA that the US has raised several excessive demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program, during the trilateral negotiations. The US and Israel waged a war on Iran on February 28 that expanded to the wider West Asia, with Tehran carrying out retaliatory military operations against the occupied territories and US military bases and assets in neighbouring Persian Gulf countries. The negotiations come after the US and Iran agreed on Wednesday to a Pakistan-brokered two-week ceasefire following Washington’s acceptance of a 10-point proposal from Tehran.Iran has stressed that sending a delegation to Pakistan shows Tehran’s resolve to negotiate with Washington, though the country's Armed Forces' “fingers would remain on the trigger”.
Putin, for his part, strongly criticized the positions and double standards of Western powers, emphasizing the need to respect Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He stressed the legitimacy of Iran’s positions, including the demand for compensation for damages caused by the military assault against Iran and the need to obtain long-term security guarantees to prevent the recurrence of such aggression.
