Ranking Security Official: No Negotiations Between Iran, US
An Iranian security official dismissed US claims over indirect talks between Tehran and Washington amid the war between two sides, stressing that President Donald Trump backed down from his threats after realizing that the Islamic Republic would target all power plants in West Asia.
"There's no direct or indirect contact with the US," the official told FNA on Monday, stressing that the American leader retreated from his threats over striking Iran's energy infrastructures after Tehran's stern warning to retaliate.He added that "pressure from financial markets and the threat related to bonds in the United States and the West increased, which was another major factor" in this regard.
Earlier, Trump stated he has ordered the Department of War to postpone raids on Iranian power plants for five days, following what he claimed were "productive conversations" between Washington and Tehran.Trump had upped the ante over the weekend, threatening strikes on Iranian energy facilities if Tehran did not lift its threat to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, to which Iran responded by publishing a list of power stations and energy facilities across the Persian Gulf that it would target. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply normally passes, has effectively been shut down since the US-Israeli aggression against Iran in late February. Hundreds of ships have reportedly remained anchored nearby, while global shipping companies and oil exporters have paused operations due to security concerns.
"Since the onset of the war, messages have been delivered to Tehran from some mediators; and the clear response has been that we will continue defending until achieving the necessary level of deterrence," the security official stressed."With this kind of psychological warfare, neither will the Strait of Hormuz return to pre-war conditions nor will calm return to energy markets," he continued, stating, "Trump’s five-day ultimatum means the continuation of this regime’s plans for crimes against people, and we will continue to respond and defend the country extensively."
