Navy Commander: Iran's Warship, Destroyer Deployed for Escort Missions
Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani stated that the Sahand destroyer and Kurdistan warship are currently employed to escort Iranian vessels.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Rear Admiral Irani said two naval groups of Iran are currently operating in the oceans, and that more than 100 Iranian marines and naval commandos are escorting vessels and maritime supply routes deep in the oceans.He referred to Sahand as having very high combat capabilities and identified Kurdistan alongside it as among the escorting destroyers.
Iran’s Navy has in recent years achieved self-sufficiency in manufacturing surface and sub-surface vessels. It has also increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made substantial headway in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the weaponry sphere.The Makran-class Kurdestan forward base ship is said to offer rescue and relief capabilities, handle the heaviest helicopters, and support up to three destroyers on a three-year, around-the-world mission without refueling stops.The Iranian-built Sahand stealth destroyer was initially launched in December 2018. It features a helicopter deck, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship weaponry, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, along with advanced electronic warfare systems.
The navy commander emphasized the implementation of overarching sea-based development policies. He stated that the Iranian Navy has brought equipment to the field that has high endurance and persistence and can operate deep in the oceans as a floating base.
