Iran's FM Warns Europe Against Activating Snapback Mechanism
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi warned that misusing the snapback provisions of the 2015 nuclear deal— which fully reinstates anti-Tehran sanctions— by the European parties to the agreement will have consequences.
"Iran has made its position clear. We have formally warned all JCPOA signatories that abuse of the snapback mechanism will be met with consequences—not only ending Europe’s role in the accord, but potentially escalating tensions beyond repair," Araqchi warned in comments published by French weekly Le Point on Sunday. The minister said that the European troika "must ask itself how it arrived at this dead end". "Under the previous US administration, the E3 acted as key intermediaries between Tehran and Washington, and Iran engaged constructively. But when political will faltered in Washington, the Europeans gradually abandoned the endeavour," he stated. "Instead of recalibrating, the United Kingdom, France and Germany adopted a confrontational posture—citing human rights, or Iran’s lawful ties with Russia—as pretexts to distance themselves diplomatically. The result: today, Iran is more sanctioned than entities officially labelled terrorists by the United Nations Security Council," the high-ranking diplomat added.
The remarks came after the European trio threatened to trigger the snapback mechanism under the 2015 accord last month. Tehran and the European trio have been conducting on-again, off-again talks since 2021, three years after the United States unilaterally left the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA. The three European parties to the agreement then failed to live up to their promise of bringing Washington back into the accord.
Araqchi in the piece said that the Europeans' ploicies has not only damaged state-level relations but also had real humanitarian consequences. “Following recent consultations in Russia and China, I expressed my willingness to travel to Paris, Berlin, and London to begin a new chapter. This initiative has led to preliminary discussions at the deputy foreign minister level —a fragile but promising start. But time is running out,” the foreign minister stated. “How we respond at this crucial moment will determine the future of Iran-Europe relations far more profoundly than many realize. Iran is ready to turn the page. We hope our European partners are too,” he added.
