Iran's FM Due in China on Tuesday
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi will visit Beijing on Tuesday for consultations with senior Chinese officials, as part of a broader diplomatic endeavour to coordinate with Tehran's key ally amid the nuclear discussions with the United States.
Speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said Araqchi will travel to China on Tuesday—ahead of a third round of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington due on Saturday in Oman."China and Russia are two important members of the United Nations Security Council and friends of Iran, and they have always been kept informed of relevant developments," the spokesman said over consultations with the 2015 nuclear accord's member states regarding Iran-US negotiations."We have also consulted with the three European JCPOA members and will continue to do so," he added.
In a trip to Moscow last week, Araqchi said in an exclusive interview with RT that his country always closely consults with its friends, Russia and China, over the nuclear issue.Iran, Russia, and China intend to deepen their cooperation in order to promote global peace, security and stability, he stated.Tehran has been strengthening its ties with Moscow and Beijing in recent years, joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2023 and the BRICS group in 2024. Military cooperation has also expanded, most recently through joint naval drills conducted by the three countries off Iran’s coast in March.Given the current international climate, working closely with Moscow and Beijing is “a necessity” for Tehran, Araqchi told the broadcaste.“We have started trilateral talks between Iran, Russia and China on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program for some time now,” he said, adding that two such meetings have already taken place. “We are ready to continue these talks and expand them to other issues,” the minister continued.
Baqaei told reporters that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and an influential player in previous processes — and as a country with which Iran has close and strategic relations — China can play a constructive role in any future developments. He stated that the foreign minister’s trip to China had been scheduled in advance, and "it is natural that the issue of negotiations between Iran and the US would also be discussed during this visit". "The main purpose of this trip is to follow up on the agreements made between the two countries," the diplomat continued.
