Iran Rules Out Direct Negotiations with US without Policy Shift

Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi stressed that Tehran will not engage in direct talks with Washington unless the United States changes its attitude toward Iran.
"As long as no significant change is observed in the approach of the opposite side towards the Iranian people, our policy will be clear and unchangeable,” Araqchi told reporters on Monday, elaborating on Tehran’s definite stance on holding direct talks with Washington. He added that no direct negotiations are on Tehran’s agenda as the US is leveling baseless claims against Iran on a daily basis.“However, the path of indirect negotiations remains open,” the top diplomat emphasized.
US President Donald Trump has recently restored his so-called “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, which he practiced in his first presidential term after unilaterally withdrawing Washington from the 2015 nuclear deal.Trump has also sent a letter to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, warning Iran to open talks on a nuclear agreement or be handled militarily. Meanwhile, the US imposed new sanctions on Iran in line with Trump's so-called policy of maximum pressure.Iranian officials have stressed that Trump's reimposition of a policy of "maximum pressure" against Tehran will end in failure as it did during his first term in office. They asserted that another round of deployment of the “maximum pressure” policy on the part of the United States against Iran will only lead to another defeat.Iranian authorities warn that such contradictory stance only deepens distrust and undermines any possibility of meaningful diplomatic engagement.Iran stresses that it has always supported diplomacy and engaged in negotiations in good faith. However, it reminds at the same time that pressure and intimidation tactics have never yielded results as far as dealing with Tehran is concerned. In his New Persian Year speech, Ayatollah Khamenei warned the US against using the language of threats against Iran. The Americans should know that in dealing with Iran, they can never get anywhere using threats, the Leader added.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Araqchi stressed that Iran would not waste any opportunity to safeguard national interests.
