Hamas: Israel ‘Delusional’ If It Thinks Military Operations Will Work

Hamas Spokesperson Osama Hamdan told Al-Jazeera that Israel is “delusional” if it thinks it can change the ceasefire by escalating its military operations.
“They were surprised that we were committed to [the ceasefire] and that every step that was taken by the resistance was in line with what we agreed upon while everything that Israel did was after consultations with the Americans,” he said.“So if they think that such operations will change the agreement, they are delusional,” he added.Hamdan stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is suffering from “megalomania” and is trying to escape the corruption cases against him by resuming the fighting.“The agreement we agreed in 2024 was violated and rejected by the Israelis, but then they had to commit to it again in 2025. Now, they are trying to reject or destroy this agreement, but it will not lead to the results the Americans and Israelis hope for,” he continued.“That’s why it’s better for the Americans to go back to their senses and understand that what is happening will only create more instability in the region,” the spokesperson noted.
Netanyahu stated in a televised address on Tuesday that Israel would continue to fight until its war aims are achieved.“This is only the beginning,” Netanyahu said at the military headquarters in Tel Aviv.He described Israel’s renewed deadly attacks on Gaza as a “return to battle forcefully”, arguing that military pressure is necessary to get the remaining hostages released. The Israeli military would continue fighting Hamas with increasing force, he added.Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has also stated that Israel’s renewed attacks in Gaza are “not a one-day operation” and the military campaign will continue in the coming days.
Gaza experienced its deadliest day since November 2023 on Tuesday, as Israel resumed the war with a deadly wave of air attacks on the enclave.More than 400 people were killed, Gaza’s Health Ministry confirmed, making it the worst single-day toll since November 7, 2023, when 548 died.Gaza Civil Defense Spokesman Mahmoud Basal told CNN that “more than 130 children and many women” have been killed, including entire families.Hamas said in a statement that Israel had resumed its “genocidal war against defenceless civilians in the Gaza Strip”.“Netanyahu and his extremist government have decided to overturn the ceasefire agreement, exposing the [Israeli] prisoners in Gaza to an unknown fate,” Hamas announced on Tuesday morning.“We demand that the mediators hold Netanyahu and the Zionist occupation fully responsible for violating and overturning the deal,” it added.
The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which came into effect on 19 January, was planned to include three phases. The first phase, which ended at the beginning of March, resulted in the release of 33 Israeli and five Thai captives by Hamas in exchange for the release of some 2,000 Palestinian captives held in Israeli prisons.Israel, backed by the US, has sought an extension of phase I of the deal while Hamas has stressed the ceasefire agreement should move to phase II.The broad outline of the second phase, the details of which have not yet been agreed, is for all Israeli captives to be released in return for a total withdrawal from Gaza.Israeli officials have long maintained that their forces will not withdraw from the enclave unless Hamas’s military and governance capabilities are completely removed.A plan for the governance of post-war Gaza would have been discussed in the second and third phases. The third phase was expected to involve the return of the bodies of Israeli captives still held in Gaza and the announcement of a three to five-year reconstruction plan for the enclave overseen by international actors.
Israel’s 18-month war on Gaza has killed a confirmed nearly 48,500 people and injured almost 112,000, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The Government Media Office has updated the death toll to at least 62,000 people, saying thousands who were missing under the rubble are now presumed dead. The military campaign has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of famine.
