Iran Strongly Condemns Israeli Full Siege on Gaza
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei strongly condemned Israel’s complete blockade on the Gaza Strip as a clear instance of crime against humanity.
Baqaei on Wednesday said Israel’s blockade of food and aid deliveries to the war-torn territory is in line with the Zionist regime’s policy of imposing famine and hunger on the oppressed people of Palestine, which amounts to “crime against humanity and a continuation of genocide".He slammed Israel for repeatedly violating its obligations and the ceasefire accord it reached with Hamas. The spokesman emphasized that all governments shoulder a shared, collective responsibility to “stop the blatant violation of international humanitarian law".The diplomat urged the United Nations Security Council and other responsible international bodies to end their inaction in the face of the occupying regime’s crimes and the continuation of its genocidal war in Gaza.
Israel unleashed the war on the besieged enclave, after Hamas and other Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movements carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the Zionist regime in response to its decades-long campaign of oppression against Palestinians.Israel’s war on Gaza has killed a confirmed nearly 48,500 people and injured almost 112,000, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The Government Media Office has updated the death toll to at least 62,000 people, saying thousands who were missing under the rubble are now presumed dead. The military campaign has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of famine. After failing to achieve its objectives in the war, Israel was forced to accept a ceasefire deal with Hamas. The long-awaited agreement went into effect in mid-January.The 42-day first phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal expired earlier this month without agreement from Israel on subsequent stages meant to secure a lasting end to its war on Gaza.Israel has since imposed a complete blockade on Gaza, which has entered a 12th day and includes preventing the entry of food, fuel and medicines to the territory in what has been described as an act of collective punishment and Israel’s “weaponisation of humanitarian aid” to pressure Hamas.
Aid groups and rights campaigners have accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity and violating international humanitarian laws for cutting off aid.People in Gaza are struggling to get bread and basic supplies as Israel’s total blockade has forced the closure of several bakeries and shops. The six-week first phase saw the release of 25 living Israeli captives and eight bodies in exchange for some 1,800 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.During the second phase, Hamas is expected to release all the remaining living captives, mostly male soldiers, in return for the freeing of more Palestinians held in the Israeli prison system. In addition, according to the document agreed to in January, Israel would initiate its “complete withdrawal” from Gaza. The third phase will see the bodies of the remaining captives handed over in return for a three- to five-year reconstruction plan for Gaza to be conducted under international supervision.
