Senior Commander: Iran's Navy to Take Delivery of Advanced Destroyer Soon
Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said that the country's naval forces will receive the Zagros destroyer, a unique indigenous vessel designed and manufactured for combat and intelligence missions.
Rear Admiral Irani stated on Monday that “a unique military vessel" dubbed "Zagros", which is developed with Iranian knowledge and enjoys distinctive features, will be launched into the water within days to start operating in the region.The Zagros is the newest and the most state-of-the-art destroyer in the Iranian Navy and is designed for various missions.He added that Iran’s largest military hub will be opened in the strategic area of Jask this week, noting that it encompasses specialized dock posts featuring the most advanced equipment. The top commander praised the quality of vessel manufacturing industry in Iran as very high, stressing that “the 86th fleet of Iran’s Navy, by overcoming various obstacles, managed to show the world powers the maritime capability of the Islamic Republic, and provide a platform for exploiting blue economy".“Today, the power of Iran’s Navy has reached such a level that other countries seek to use our capacity and capability," he continued, referring to the presence of Iran’s naval forces in international waters.
The Iranian Navy’s 86th flotilla, comprising the Dena destroyer and the Makran forward base ship, left Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Abbas in September 2022 and returned home in May 2023 after sailing 63,000 kilometers of sea routes.Dena is a Mowj-class destroyer that joined the Iranian Navy in June 2021. The military vessel is equipped with anti-ship cruise missiles, torpedoes and naval cannons. Makran is a forward base ship weighing 121,000 tons. The warship can carry five helicopters and is employed for providing logistical support for the combat warships.Iran’s Navy has in recent years achieved self-sufficiency in manufacturing surface and sub-surface vessels. It has also increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made substantial headway in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the weaponry sphere.Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed that the country will not hesitate to boost its military capabilities, including its missile and drone power, which are entirely meant for defense, and that Iran’s defense capabilities will never be subject to negotiation.
