Ex-Israeli FM Expelled from UN Summit
Former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was thrown out of the venue of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations summit amid objections of a number of Islamic countries and delegations participating in the meeting.
Livni, who was in the Portuguese city of Cascais, to attend the 10th high-level summit of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, was barred from participating in the event, amid the regime officials isolation on the international scene.Several Muslim states, in a coordinated move, protested against the presence of the former ranking Israeli diplomat at the venue of the summit, citing the Tel Aviv regime's military onslaught against the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, which has so far claimed the lives of mass number of civilians, mainly children and women.Meanwhile, the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) called for pressure on the Portuguese authorities to arrest and prosecute Livni.Back in January 2017, Livni cancelled a trip to Brussels after Belgian prosecutors confirmed they wanted to question her over her role in war crimes and crimes against humanity during Israel’s offensive in Gaza in 2008-2009.Livni is named along with other political and military leaders in a complaint filed in June 2010 over crimes committed during the Gaza war. More than 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed during the Israeli aggression between late December 2008 and mid-January 2009.
The ousting comes days after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.The men were accused of “crimes against humanity and war crimes" committed from early October 2023 until late May 2024”, a statement from the court said.There are “reasonable grounds” to believe that Gallant and Netanyahu “intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival, including food, water, and medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity”, it added.All 124 members of the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC, are now compelled to detain the two Israelis and hand them over to the court.
Israel’s October 2023-present genocidal war on the besieged enclave has killed over 44,200 people, mostly children and women, and injured more than 104,500 others. The figures exclude tens of thousands of dead who are believed to be buried in the bombed-out ruins of homes, shops, shelters and other buildings.The military campaign has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of famine. The Palestinian territory has been identified as one of the places most likely to see deadly hunger levels in the coming months, according to a new report by United Nations food agencies.
